Manifesto 1 - English

To see the world is my life's end. To see things I draw them. Drawing teaches what active life hides: the nameless shapes of clouds, the depth of foliage, the character of faces and  façades, and the spaces in between bodies. To discover those shapes, and to get intimately acquainted with them, is to make myself at home outside the house.  

Things rise up gloriously from the surface of the earth. They stand there before me: trees, bodies, mountains and buildings. They stand in the void against the light, or outlined against the dark, exposed to the weather. Life rises up against the sky until it falls and lies down. This quiet spectacle of things standing there before and behind each other is the spectacle of the world. 

In a successful drawing or painting there is something very much there. It is a support for those who contemplate it. It is not there by itself but in our eyes, and so with or within us. Painting creates an intimate bond between mind and mindless matters. 

Manifesto 2 - Nederlands

De zin van mijn leven is de wereld zien. Om goed te zien teken en schilder ik. Schilderkunst maakt de dingen vertrouwd en intiem. Dit is een voorwaarde voor een toereikend wereldbeeld.

Ik probeer in mijn tekeningen van bos en bomen, mensen, landschappen en stadsgezichten de wirwar te ontwarren en het onafzienbare aanschouwelijk te maken.

Ik teken wat woorden niet kunnen zeggen; ik schrijf wat getekende beelden niet kunnen uitdrukken. 

De voorstelling is ter plaatse naar het leven getekend en zorgvuldig in de werkplaats samengesteld. Het beeld is zowel  concreet bekeken als aan de toevallige plek en het  moment onttrokken. Het resultaat is een tijdloos beeld Naar waarheid getekend maar vrij geselecteerd,  en zo gecomponeerd dat het in het bewustzijn past. De schilder bepaalt wat op de voorgrond staat, wat er half achter schuilgaat en wat aan de horizon blijft hangen.
